Arducopter – First Flight

Arducopter – First Flight

Just received a brand new Arducopter HexaC from 3DRobotics this week. It took me a few days to get it setup and ready for flight. The following video is a few of the clips that I was able to shoot with our new GoPro Hero 3 Black camera. So far its only been up in the front and back yard but I hope to get it out into a large open area sometime next week. This should give me some room to learn the controls and test out some of the flight modes that are available with Mission Planner.

Unfortunately 3DR forgot to send my USB ground receiver with the telemetry kit so I cannot see or test any live flight data.

Unfortunately, I’ve not had a chance to get the bird back in the air until today. 3DR sent me the wrong FTDI telemetry cable so I’ve not been able to use OSD/FPV properly. I’ve heard terrible things about their customer service and I find it hard not to agree. Usually takes 2-3 days to get a reply and their complete lack of instructions is actually quite risky, especially for customers who order ready to fly kits but have to struggle to figure out why the camera won’t work or question the cables it came with.

Anyways, not to get off topic but figuring out these issues has prioritized my time over actually flying the Hex. On a good note though, I’m about to use your tutorial and get a USB trigger sorted out for the canon that I got yesterday.

I understand your frustrations with customer service. My experience has been hit and miss. The first APM 2.5 board and minimOSD were both DOA and it took 3+ months to get replacements. They apologized and said it slipped through the cracks or something along those lines. At Other times the response time has been reasonable…
The lack of existing support and documentation was definitely a motivation in getting this site up and running. DIY UAVers should have access to a single site where they can follow a logical flow of information and get what they need to accomplish their goals. I know we wont be able to cover all aspects here so by focusing on a few aircraft and applications specific to mapping, at least folks will have a single resource location for learning. It seems I carried the tangent further 😉
Good luck with the trigger and camera set up and let me know if I can be of help.
        What camera did you purchase?

I got the Canon Powershot SX260. The slightly older model with GPS. Takes really great pictures and the 20x optical zoom is awesome. I stood in my living room and took pictures of the neighbors mailbox about 300 feet down the road. I could not even see it without looking through the camera. Really nice.

That is currently my favorite mapping camera for natural color.
            Love it!
